Needled

Classic tattoo graphics lend themselves
beautifully to the project as they symbolise very basic emotions which can easily be projected onto an animal such as the love for one’s mother or the longing for freedom.

I have started my research by trying to tattoo
leather but the tan seals the skin and prevents the ink from sinking in. The next attempt was to tattoo the skin before the tanning; I chose to use a pig’s skin as it is the closest thing to human and therefore the most suitable for the process.

Needled

I am very intrigued by people’s relationship
with animal products. The use of fur is always controversial, with high profile objection, disgust and moral justification. At the same time, leather is perceived as a legitimate material which is hardly associated with the animal it comes from and almost never generates debate or questioning.
The chemical tanning process (as opposed to
organic) makes leather almost unrecognisable
as an animal product and hides its past as a
piece of skin.
By tattooing leather, hence treating it as skin,
I am hoping to highlight the true nature of the material in order to question whether it would trigger a different reaction. Would furniture upholstered in leather still be perceived as a harmless item of luxury?

Tattoos are a way of expressing one’s personality, opinion and social belonging, they are an extremely human way to define ourselves and display our individuality.
Animals bred for food or material are never
perceived as individuals, By using the symbolic language of tattoos I was hoping to re-establish the link to the living creature a product used to be.
